Tsurphu Monastery is the traditional seat of the Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Founded in 1189 by Düsum Khyenpa, the First Karmapa, Tsurphu Monastery is one of the most important Kagyu monasteries in Tibet and the birthplace of the reincarnated lama (tulku) system in Tibetan Buddhism.
